What's new in the September 20 2013 version of Witty Profiles?

  • New Design - Witty has a new linear design making it easier to scroll through and read quotes.
  • Tags have been removed from the side navigation and put in the header. They are sorted by popularity. You can see all popular tags by clicking "more".
  • Better Navigation - The links to "top now", "top today", "top this week" have been removed from the side navigation and put in the header making the information hierarchy more logical and easier to understand.
  • Mobile and Desktop versions of Witty now look the same.
  • People You Might Like now appear in the footer.
  • The Newest Wittians now appear in the footer.
  • Default Profile Pictures are cute now.
  • Profile Picture - You can now click on your profile picture when viewing your profile to change your picture.
  • Mobile Quote Editor now has better random formats.
  • Header Color - The profile editor has new fields to control the color and background image of the header navigation bar.
  • Stuff for CSS Experts
    • #nav, #now_nav - You might want to make those div ids transparent or a different color if your profile has a background color or background image. The new navigation is inside them on desktop(#nav), and mobile(#now_nav). Here's an example that makes the header transparent:
      <style type="text/css">
      #nav, #now_nav {
        background:transparent;
      }
      </style>
    • .unit-quote-top-unpadded - Quotes are now contained in a div with a class called .unit-quote-top-unpadded. This class has a background image to make the right side a light grey color. You might want to make that class's background transparent or something if your profile has a background color or image. Here's an example that sets the background to transparent:
      <style type="text/css">
      .unit-quote-top-unpadded {
        background:transparent;
      }
      </style>

Where did you get the idea for Witty Profiles?

Back in 2003 everyone chatted with each other with AIM. When you were away from your keyboard (AFK), you would put up an Away Message. Often it was something like "BRB", but sometimes it was a witty saying like "Hey I'll be back in 5 minutes but if I'm not just read this away message again." AIM also had a little profile you could write a few paragraphs in. I wanted Witty to be a huge database of stuff to put in those profiles and away messages.

"Away messages" are really a thing of the past. They lived in a time before mobile devices. We are now never AFK (away from keyboard). Today we have texting, Facebook status messages and Twitter instead.

Many years ago people chatted with a program called AIM. AIM had a window where you could write a little about yourself. This was called your profile. People would put famous quotes or witty sayings in there. Also, when you weren't chatting, you were "away" [from your keyboard]. Witty Profiles was originally a website full of witty quotes to put in your profile and away messages. The website has grown from simple funny text messages to fancy HTML formatted poems, stories, quizzes and descriptions of everyday events and feelings.

What is a good quote?

A good quote is something witty, clever, funny or inspirational that you would want to hang on your wall and read again and again. A good quote is something you wouldn't be ashamed of if someone you knew read it. A good quote is something strangers would reblog or print out and hang on their walls.

What are some examples of good quotes?

What is Witty's unofficial motto?
